                                    What is a Taper-Wall Yurt?

A Taper-Wall Yurt is a yurt where the walls taper out - or in - depending on which way you're going.    As with all yurts, they are round, have a central skylight, as well as a tension cable around the top of the wall.  It is an adaptation of the Yurt originally found on the steppes of Central Asia and I credit Bill Coperthwaite with the creative genius behind the Taper-Wall Yurt.

There are many benefits to the tapered walls -

  • The tapered walls allow the eaves to come closer to the ground which connects the yurt to its surroundings - it blends in and doesn't impose on its environs.
  • A feeling of spaciousness is created because the volume of the space in the yurt is much larger than the square foot area of the floor alone.
  • It extends the roof line away from the foundation which protects the floor framing - This allows us to avoid the use of chemically treated lumber
  • Because the windows see little active precipitation, it allows for a simpler window installation.
  • The tapered wall creates a comfortable angle to lean back against on the inside.
Taper-Wall Yurts are not designed to be moved.  If you want to be able to move your yurt, consider a Lattice-Wall Yurt.
